Growing Tips

  • Delphiniums prefer consistent moisture, particularly while they are actively growing and flowering.

  • A layer of mulch around the plants can help retain moisture and keep the roots cool, but avoid piling mulch directly against the stems.

  • Delphiniums are hungry plants and appreciate fertile soil

  • Feed with compost or a balanced fertiliser during the growing season. Once plants are actively growing, a regular feed can help support strong stems and abundant flowering.

Avoid excessive nitrogen, which can result in lush foliage and weaker stems.

  • For the best vase life, harvest delphinium stems when approximately one-third to one-half of the flowers are open.

  • Once the first flush of flowers has finished, cut the flowering stems back to encourage the plant to produce more growth and potentially a second flush of flowers, particularly where growing conditions remain favourable.

Continue watering and feeding while the plant is actively growing.
